In somewhat surprising news, TikTok.com became the most visited website, on Google.com.
This all comes from Cloudflare, which ranks traffic to sites around the world every year. Typically, the top five websites are Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, and Netflix. Sometimes Netflix and Amazon flip-flop, but other than that the order is usually the same. This year, however, TikTok has taken over. After being number seven last year.
According to Cloudflare, TikTok took first place on February 17, 2021. Then, in March, it had a few more days at number one. But after August 10, 2021, TikTok was number one most of the time. So it’s not just a one-time app for TikTok, it seems to be a pretty popular app all year round.
Interestingly, YouTube wasn’t at the top of the charts until the Super Bowl ads debuted.
Despite YouTube’s true popularity, it only topped the charts on one day – February 2. This is the day that many Super Bowl commercials debuted. It was also the day after a coup in Myanmar, which was recorded in an exercise video shown on local television and then shared widely on YouTube.
Cloudflare says Facebook is a “solid number three” all year round, except for its October outage where it slumped into fourth place.
TikTok taking the top spot for 2021 is pretty big. Just think about how often people visit Google.com. Whether it’s to search, for their email, or to use one of their other products, all of which are based on the main Google.com domain. That’s a lot of traffic. And somehow, TikTok has become so popular that it overtook Google.com this year. This is how popular he has become. Now the real test will be whether TikTok can keep that spot in 2022 and beyond.
Google.com is normally number one in all of these types of rankings and has been for over a decade.
